Monika Imeri is a PhD candidate and a seasoned researcher whose work focuses on the complex relationships between housing, displacement, and the politics of belonging. Monika’s work is informed by critical feminist geographies, investigating how race, class, and gender intersect to shape experiences of exclusion and inequity for equity deserving communities. Her research sheds light on the structural forces and policy decisions that create and sustain systemic inequalities, particularly in relation to access to essential resources and services. She draws on qualitative research methods such as oral histories, in-depth interviews, focus groups and visual storytelling to center the voices and embodied knowledge of those who are most impacted by these inequities.
Monika has extensive on-the-ground experience working on community-based projects with diverse racialized immigrant communities. Her research practice creates meaningful space for the voices of people from equity-deserving communities to not only be heard but to inform pathways toward equitable policies and practices.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Monika is actively involved with local community organizations, advocating for urban and social justice. She leverages her research to build bridges between research, advocacy, policy and lived expertise to advance social justice in Canada.
